Mendel. The Fall 2012 collection was inspired by Diana Vreeland's fashion editorial in Vogue which she created with photographer Helmut Newton at Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona. The collection featured luxurious materials including furs and leathers mixed with silk and geometric embellishments reflecting a modern take on Gaudi's architectural designs and mosaic patterns. J. Mendel's signature red carpet gowns featured willowy chiffon dresses with low cut backs, tantalizingly high slits and sheer cutouts so precisely done as if to resemble stained glass put to fabric. Over the years the scotch-fueled fun, games and mayhem have grown into a bi-coastal affair. This year's dinner in Los Angeles was at the legendary Chateau Marmont where the Scot's chef put together a special menu together along the lines of the traditional fayre that has been served at these dinners for the last 200 or more years. Burns Night is the celebration of poet Robert Burns, who is probably Scotland's greatest export, though few people may realize it. If you've ever sung or heard "Old Lang Syne" on New Years Eve then you know his work, or at least a little of it. What better excuse for fun and games could you have then a scallywag who sired children on numerous women, loved to eat, drink and be merry with his friends and passed away from pneumonia after falling asleep in a ditch in the rain on the way home from a particularly boozy evening. His last child was born the day he was buried and his birthday is still celebrated the world over in every language in every country over 250 years later.
