The main dining room is immaculate. Located in the lower level of the restaurant, the space features high ceilings, backlit chess pieces around the top half of the wall and plush circular booths. The focal point of the room is centered around the buddha ice sculpture and magnificent weathered Japanese bell. The statue sits on a pool of water sprinkled with rose pedals. Guests are encouraged to scoop the pedals with a wooden spoon and place them on the lap of the buddha for good luck. As the night goes on, the buddha melts into the pool of water and replaced daily.
The crowd consists of foodies, fashionistas, business people and the Manhattan elite. Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, and Alicia Keyes have been spotted here recently. It is no surprise that the space is packed on a tuesday night because of its attention to detail and exquisite interior.
The food is traditional Japanese cuisine with a contemporary flair. The menu features a variety of raw food including the Kobe beef sashimi which is served in a cave of ice. Though this is a Japanese restaurant, meat lovers should not be intimidated by the delicious sashimi and raw fish. A wide assortment of Kobe Beef is available to satisfy the most carnivorous appetites.
The use of frozen ice and led lights make the presentation of many dishes a spectacle. Oysters are served on a bed of illuminated ice while salmon tartar comes with a glowing frozen cube and test tube of soy sauce. In contrast, the Wagyu sirloin super premium cut comes on a flaming hot stone. When served in a dimly lit environment, the server douses the meat with flaming brandy, creating a glowing spectacle of fire and Hennessey flavor.
