Commerce – New York

Strolling through a quaint street lined with brownstones, you suddenly come across a dimly lit façade with a name demurely etched on the window glass.  From the outside, the restaurant is very unassuming, but the moment you enter the door, you are met full-force with the bustling energy of Commerce, a West Village hotspot.

Stepping into the dining room, the mosaic-tiled floors, black walnut furniture, recessed lighting and exposed brick nostalgically emulate the speakeasy origins of this space.  Art deco frescos adorn the walls near the ceilings, depicting the tale of feuding twin daughters of a wealthy merchant who finally reconcile in the “Commerce” garden.

The owner, Tony Zazula, is often seen greeting patrons at the door or flitting around the room, stopping at each table to converse with the diners if even for a few minutes.  This personalized attention flows through to the staff who make every diner feel well taken care of.

Chef Harold Moore’s contemporary American cuisine is simple yet opulent.  The quality of food is apparent in every dish, from presentation to actual taste.  Entrees such as the lamb, slowly braised for hours so that the meat is so tender you don’t even need a knife, only serve to showcase the exquisite care that is put into each dish.  Other favorites include the spring vegetable fricassee with generous lacings of truffle oil, and the moist and flavorful bacon crusted halibut.

It is no wonder that this upscale neighborhood gem has enticed many celebrities such as Kate Winslet, Drew Barrymore, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Conan O’Brien, who are often seen enjoying the lively atmosphere.  Packed even in the middle of the week,Commerce is perfect for a fun, social, and delicious dinner with a group of friends.
