Chaya Downtown

photography & article by David C Lee

The first Chaya (Chaya means teahouse in Japanese) was established in Japan underneath a Cherry blossom tree 390 years ago.  After a long wait, the popular Asian fusion franchise has finally made it to downtown Los Angeles.  Located in the heart of the Drago center, Chaya’s reputation precedes itself with its Asian inspired design and its delightful playful accents.  The facade and interior was designed by fame architect Anthony Poon.

The restaurant is separated into two sections, the main dining room and lounge.  The lounge is half outside and half inside, though it simulates an outdoor patio.  Radiant heat comes from the bottom of the floor and heats the entire space.  A trendy metallic ceiling with circular skylight holes sits above patrons as they sip on a variety of cocktails.

When you enter the main dining room, you will immediately see a chandelier made of replicated items of trash from the British sea shore including cups, spider webs, sunglasses and Tupperware.  The whimsical contraption was created by artist Stuart Haygarth and makes for a great conversation piece and goes well with the downtown spirit.  As downtowners, we don’t take ourselves too seriously.

The crowd consists of stylish hip working professionals, foodies and trendsetters.  During happy hour, runway music blazes in the background while businessmen and women talk about their stressful workdays.  Happy hour is happening with a variety of specials on beer, wine, rolls…you name it, they have it.

Executive Chef Shigefumi Tachibe is responsible for the delicious Asian Fusion Cuisine.  There is something on the menu for everyone–Feast on Maine Lobster with Shrimp Raviolli, Miso marinated white sea bass or grilled prime beef rib eye.  If you are craving sushi, a full sushi bar served a variety of classic and exotic rolls and fresh sashimi.

3 to 7 happy hour
