Lifestyle fashion guru and native New Yorker Steven Autry began his successful design career after studying at Rollins College and a long term relationship with luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman. While starting out merchandising mannequins, the fiber glass dolls were not enough to contain his artistic vision and interest in home design. He was quickly moved to the home floor visual team. This vast experience in high fashion home design served as an ongoing, hands-on and constantly evolving education in interior design.
Autry worked in visual merchandising for Bergdorf Goodman for more than six years, working closely with a team of eleven to continually reinvent the 10,000 square feet of the home department every mont. His philosophy is based on making a house a home and creating a cohesive space that is handsome and distinguished and yet comfortable to live in. That being said, Autry still firmly believes every home should have a bit of glamour.

STK has become synonymous with sexy. It is the most fashionable steakhouse experience that you will find in LA and many celebrities will vouch for it. The grand entrance is an archway covered in ivy and once you step inside the door, you will see the main bar and dining rooms.

Kim Kardashian, David Spade, Sean Penn and Paula Abdul have all been spotted here. The restaurant, which is strategically located across the street from Koi, has become the new hotspot, the place to be seen. It isn’t surprising to see herds of paparazzi waiting in front of the venue.

Staggering spherical lights hang from high ceilings which create a pleasing visual effect. The main dining room is black and white. Purple orchids in the middle of the room give it a hint of color.

Big Eye Tuna: spice rub, avocado, garden vegetables

Bull horns cover the back wall of the main dining room while a mix of modern and Western music play in the background. Snakeskin menus and comfortable leather seating add to the glitz and glamour of this trendy Beverly Hills scene.

Kansas City Veal: mushrooms, finerling potatos, plum demi

We started with the spicy tuna tartare and watermelon hamachi. The Hamachi is a refreshing mix of hamachi with a crunch of ginger and cilantro. It is the perfect dish to cleanse the palette. The tuna was mixed with peaches, yuzu aioli sauce and crisp won tons.

Steaks come in all different cuts and sizes. Since I was hungry, the plan was to order the whopping 34 oz cowboy rib-eye, but instead I went with the 20 oz bone-in ribeye. Each steak has an option of toppings and side dishes. I would highly recommend a opping of crab and a side of parmesan truffle fries. These fries are to die for—they melt in your mouth with perfect texture and taste sensations.

Of course the steak was savory and amazing. I ordered mine medium rare for ultimate taste and flavor.

Set in Harlem in 1987, it is the story of Claireece “Precious” Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), a sixteen-year-old African-American girl born into a life no one would want. She’s pregnant for the second time by her absent father; at home, she must wait hand and foot on her mother (Mo’Nique), a poisonously angry woman who abuses her emotionally and physically. School is a place of chaos, and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks and an awful secret: she can neither read nor write.

photography by David Lee
hair & makeup by Jhizet Panosian for Exclusive Artists
styling by Gary Samuelian

Precious may sometimes be down, but she is never out. Beneath her impassive expression is a watchful, curious young woman with an inchoate but unshakeable sense that other possibilities exist for her. Threatened with expulsion, Precious is offered the chance to transfer to an alternative school, Each One/Teach One.

Precious doesn’t know the meaning of “alternative,” but her instincts tell her this is the chance she has been waiting for. In the literacy workshop taught by the patient yet firm Ms. Rain (Paula Patton), Precious begins a journey that will lead her from darkness, pain and powerlessness to light, love and self-determination.

In Official Selection at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival – Un Certain Regard, and winner of three awards at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival including the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition, PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL ‘PUSH’ BY SAPPHIRE stars Mo’Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, Sherri Shepherd, Lenny Kravitz and introducing Gabourey Sidibe.

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 26, 2010) – Premiering on Saturday, February 13th and Sunday, February 14th, Evo, L.A.’s only LEED-Silver high-rise residence, will transform its 20th floor into five exquisite living spaces featuring designs from some of L.A.’s elite interior design experts.

Participating designers include:

Daniel Vandenbark – a well-known designer who uses the essence of architecture to blend creative and environmental design ideas.

Mark Cutler Design – one of Robb Report’s “Top 40” firms in the country, Mark Cutler Design, Inc. blends the fundamentals of building and design into elegant reflections of his clients.

Room & Board – is a leader of lifestyle home furnishings that are simple, modern, and sustainable. The design team from Room & Board will use Room & Board branded pieces along with the iconic pieces by Eames, Noguchi, Saarinen and George Nelson, to fit the design aesthetics of Evo.

David Desmond – an internationally recognized interior designer based in Los Angeles. His projects reflect the past through a modern prism, and distinguish themselves by restrained luxury, meticulous attention to detail and superlative craftsmanship.

Modern Home + Living Magazine – the premiere modern celebrity lifestyle brand will provide a window into the up-close-and-personal world of all facets of celebrity living.

“The goal is to enlighten Angelenos about modern luxury living in a high-rise. High-rise living is still a new concept to most L.A. residents, and many aren’t accustomed to designing for that type of space. We decided to create beautiful models to provide them with expert examples of the best in design for modern high-rise luxury living,” stated Evo’s Sales and Marketing Director Rhonda Slavik.

The completed residences of each of the designers will not only serve as useful model high-rise homes, but will also accentuate the inherent beauty of EVO by highlighting it’s magnificent architectural bones and breathtaking views.

According to Slavik, Evo’s Designer Showcase will provide an excellent opportunity to fulfill future residents’ desire to learn more about designing a luxury residence.

Tips and tricks from participating designers include:

One bold shot of color can set the tone of an entire space. For example, painting one wall red in an entry hallway creates a strong first impression of warmth, welcome and intrigue.

Provided by designer David Desmond

Instead of using one large coffee table, try using a collection of smaller ones grouped together. They can be the same or vastly different styles, but either way, the grouping really creates a powerful point of interest and gives you plenty of flexibility when you’re entertaining.

Provided by designer Mark Cutler Design, Inc.

If you have a spectacular view, make it become part of the room. Keep furnishings simple.

Provided by Room & Board

The mystique of the Takami experience is magical and surpasses the majority of downtown LA dining experiences. Located in the penthouse on the 21st level of the financial district, the restaurant is best known for its spectacular “New York” cosmopolitan view. Nestled in the midst of the concrete jungle known as the financial district, the glistening city lights shine all around you as you dine on fine sushi and robata.

When you enter the restaurant, you will notice a zen-like yet futuristic setting. Traditional Asian elements such as bamboo and feng-shui wooden furniture fill the main bar. A metallic sheet filled with backlit holes sit along the walls of the bar simulating city lights.

After passing the main bar, you will see the main dining room which is lined with retro-60s inspired lamps and a glass wall that divides you from the outside. The best place to sit is on the outside patio that showcases the 180 degree view of city lights and skyscrapers. Plush leather booths surround large magnificent tables while patrons gaze on one of the most spectacular views of the city.

The space is masculine and larger than life. Tall ceilings and magnificent beams separate the dining space from the elegant cityscape surroundings.

Since it is located in the middle of the financial district, this is the perfect place to close a deal with a power lunch. If you are coming here on a date, the best time to come would be right before the sunset, then you will see the impressive transition from day to night.

Start your meal with the kushi-katsu–skewered panko crusted shrimp stuffed mushroom, mozzarella and camembert cheese. Then move onto the famous Takami Robata (items are sauteed and presented on a stick). A variety of vegetables, meat, seafood and poultry are available for robata–shishito peppers, shitake, tsukune (chicken meatball), duck breast, foie gras, lamb chops and Chilean Seabass.

The seared yellowtail with diced chiles is a refreshing yet spiced appetizer while the spicy tuna on crispy rice is sure to delight. For entrees, the miso Chilean Sea bass is probably one of the best in the city. The flavor is subtle yet powerful. The texture of the cut of fish meshes together while it melts in your mouth. For rolls, try the signature 21st roll–snow crab legs are wrapped around spicy tuna king crab and avocado with sweet creamy sauce.

For dessert, order the Japanese tiramisu, a unique blend of homemade tiramisu with ginger creme anglaise, topped with vanilla ice cream. The sensation is succulent and mesmerizing–rivaling the best of Italian restaurants with an Asian twist.
